Before I had a mini me that traveled everywhere with me I always wore a crossbody purse. It was easy to grab, simple to carry, and held all sorts of stuff.
Then I became a mom. There are now many essentials that need to leave the house with us. Sometimes I will bring the diaper bag with us, although I hate lugging that thing around. I tried putting my items into the diaper bag for a while, but they got lost and cluttered. I have finally found the happy medium by carrying around a wide purse that holds all my essentials and her essentials. Lately I’ve been leaving the diaper bag home, and I’ve never felt so free.
I stopped carrying items that I didn’t need. Items I always said to myself, “Maybe I’ll use this at some point”, but never did. There were so many things I purged, which made room for the important things in my bag.
Next I thought to myself that this is something I could do in other places of my life as well. I started in my closet. I pulled out all sorts of clothes that I thought, “Maybe I’ll wear this at some point”. Let’s face it, if you haven’t worn it in years, you probably won’t be wearing it anytime soon. All of a sudden I had more room in my closet, and that has never been the case.
This continued with kitchen utensils, other accessories, shoes, books, purses, DVD’s, toys, and so on. Here are three things I started asking myself to begin decluttering my life.
Ask yourself, “When is the last time I used this?”
If you have no idea what the answer is, then get rid of it!
Ask yourself, “Am I only keeping this to hold onto a memory?”
I had shabby, old sweatshirts that I got in Boston and Syracuse that I never wore because they were… old and shabby. I loved my trips to those cities, and hated to throw away the clothing I brought home from there, but there is no use holding on to something simply for a memory.
Ask yourself, “Does it make you happy?”
If you keep something just to simply have it around then it is not worth taking up your space.
Decluttering is such a good feeling, and it allows you to see the essentials that you love and need in your life. Start by decluttering one part of your life and move on to the next. I promise you won’t regret it.
